Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Nov. 9 sent a
congratulatory letter to Donald Trump, the newly elected US
president.
"I cordially congratulate you on the occasion of your election as
the US president,” President Aliyev’s congratulatory message said.
“Your victory testifies to the friendly US people’s trust and
support.”
“I hope that the US-Azerbaijani bilateral relations will continue
to develop successfully,” President Aliyev said.
Ilham Aliyev reminded that the US-Azerbaijani relations have a
25-year history, and during this period, the relations of
friendship and cooperation reached a high level.
“We actively cooperate in political, economic, energy, security
spheres, as well as in the fight against international terrorism
and NATO peacekeeping operations in Afghanistan,” said the
president said.
According to the President Aliyev's message, Azerbaijan has been
suffering from Armenia’s aggressive policy for many years. Twenty
percent of Azerbaijani lands are under occupation, more than one
million Azerbaijanis became refugees and internally displaced
people, the message said.
According to the message, despite the UN Security Council’s four
resolutions calling for the immediate and unconditional withdrawal
of the Armenian armed forces from the territory of Azerbaijan,
Armenia ignores those resolutions.
Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity has been recognized by the world
community and international organizations, the message said.
According to the message, Azerbaijan’s firm position is that the UN
Security Council’s four resolutions related to the Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict, as well as the resolutions and decisions of the UN
General Assembly, OSCE, Council of Europe, NATO, the European
Parliament, Economic Cooperation Organization, Non-Aligned Movement
and other international organizations must be implemented.
The conflict must be resolved within the territorial integrity of
Azerbaijan in accordance with the norms of international law, the
message said.
“I hope that as a co-chairing country of the OSCE Minsk Group, the
US under your leadership will contribute to the fair settlement of
this conflict in accordance with the norms of the international
law, within Azerbaijan's territorial integrity,” the message
said.
“Once again, I extend my sincere congratulations and wish you
robust health, happiness and success in your future activity for
the sake of welfare of friendly US people," said Ilham Aliyev.
