One of the many reasons Baku is the place to be this autumn is the Traditional Honey Fair, where the sweetest honey varieties displayed.

Sweet tooth should not miss the chance to visit the month-long honey fair in Baku, which this time is running at the Amay Trade Center, located in Novel Avenue, 23.

The fair that will run until November 15 brings together 254 producers from throughout the country and presents 71.7 tons of honey products. The retail price of honey varies in the country between 20 and 30 manats per kilogram or higher. During the fair cost of honey here is lower than in the market.

A variety of honey flavors: lime, meadow, acacia, crown of thorns, chestnut, sunflower, licorice flower, sweet clover, etc are produced in the country.

The country is home to one the most famous bee species in the world – the Mountain Grey Caucasian Bee – which can fly at 6 degrees below zero C and has the longest proboscis for sucking up nectar.

Deputy Agriculture Minister Seyfeddin Talibov, who attended the opening of the fair, has informed that the honey fair has turned into the tradition.

He went on to say the ministry this year strengthened control over the industry in order to avoid any shortcomings and to ensure the population with high quality products.

All the products being displayed at the fair have been sent to the laboratory for analysis. During the analysis, it was revealed that honey of some 53 producers had poor quality, due to which they were disqualified.

Talibov also spoke about the development of beekeeping in the country, mentioning that the sector is in the focus of the government.

“It is worth noting that last year the Beekeeping Centre was established at the Institute of Livestock. In addition, we are working on the development of beekeeping in accordance with the worldwide practices,” he said.

Talibov said the country already launched artificial breeding of purebred queens. He noted that the process is carried out with the support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

So far, there were raised 100 such queens, he said adding that this is a very good indicator.

Today the beekeeping development is a priority in the world, Talibov said, adding that this is due to the fact that beekeeping is an industry that does not harm the environment and agriculture.

“FAO currently is working on declaring May 20 as the World Day of Beekeeping,” he emphasized.

Widespread in the mountainous regions and adored for the nutritional and therapeutic qualities of honey, apiculture is a rapidly developing sector of the Azerbaijani economy.

The government has recently freed farmers engaged in apiculture from taxes until 2019, besides the land tax. Moreover, the government gives subsidies, preferential loans to the farmers to facilitate growth in the sector.
