Heavy rains observed in Baku on Wednesday almost paralyzed the city, creating long traffic jams in the center.

The rain, accompanied by thunder, lasted all day long. As a result of heavy rains, huge puddles were formed in some streets and roads of the capital.

Forecasters said that the Wednesday evening’s shower beat the record of those fallen over the past several decades.

Gulshad Mammadova, Director of the hydro meteorological forecasting Bureau of National Hydrometeorology Department of the Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry claimed that over the past 30-40 years, Baku for the first time experienced a fall of 65 millimeters of rain per day.

Rainy weather in September was observed in previous years, as well, the expert emphasized. “The amount of precipitation in Baku on September 21, 1980, amounted to 46 millimeters. On the night of September 24, 2013 some 33 millimeters of precipitation fell,” said Mammadova.

According to her, the rain, which began on Wednesday and continued until Thursday morning, was more intense. The most amount of precipitation was reported near "Genclik" metro station.

“There, the amount of precipitation was 65 millimeters. In general, the amount of precipitation in Baku, was 47 millimeters,” she said.

The cause of the heavy rain in Baku, the hydrometeorologist explained by invasion of cold air currents to the territory of the country from the northwest.

Meanwhile, forecasters predict more heavy rains in the capital city. The temperature in Baku will stand at 18-20 daytime and 13-15 at night.
