Extension of the presidential term from five to seven years in Azerbaijan is in line with the legislation of the country, Siyavush Novruzov, deputy executive secretary of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party, told Trend.

He said that a seven-year presidential term will allow full implementation of the program set by the President. Novruzov mentioned that the seven-year presidential term exists in around 30 world countries, underlining that the proposed amendment on a new presidential term in Azerbaijan has been stipulated by several factors.

“The point is that the municipal, parliamentary and presidential elections have been held in Azerbaijan for three consecutive years. Each political organization as well as other structures engaged in the process spend one year on the preparations for elections. Therefore, the various structures have been dealing only with election in the country for three years,” he added.

He said that other factors necessitating to prolong the term include certain issues connected with the economy and governance.

“These issues include resolving social problems, improving work and creating new jobs," he added.

Highlighting other amendments proposed to the Constitution Novruzov said that the establishment of the first vice-president and vice-president positions in Azerbaijan targets presenting the country in the international arena becomes more and more relevant.

The amendment on the extension of the office term of the President is proposed to Article 101.1 on procedure of elections of the president of Azerbaijan. The proposal is part of a draft Referendum Act envisaging amendments to the Constitution of the country.

The Constitutional Court of Azerbaijan approved the draft amendments to the Constitution at its meeting on July 25.

The Court concluded that the changes proposed by President Ilham Aliyev are in line with the requirements of the Constitution of Azerbaijan and may be put up for a nationwide vote.

The results of the Referendum which is scheduled for September 26, 2016 will be announced till October, 21
