International tribunal must consider Armenia's crimes against Azerbaijan - FM

The crimes of Armenia against Azerbaijan have to be seriously investigated, thoroughly considered and assessed in international tribunal, spokesman of Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry Hikmat Hajiyev said on Feb. 22.

All international organizations recognize the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, Hajiyev said.

“Armenia must understand that. Armenian armed forces have to be withdrawn from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan. The current status-quo is unacceptable. Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity must be ensured,” he said.

“Double standards exist in this process. We are doing our best to make Armenia's crimes against Azerbaijan be investigated and assessed at international level,” Hajiyev said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
