Azerbaijan declares Karampetian wanted by Interpol

By Rashid Shirinov

Prosecutor General’s Office of Azerbaijan has declared Kaspar Karampetian, head of the European Armenian Federation for Justice and Democracy operating in Belgium, wanted by Interpol, the Office informed on February 21.

He was declared wanted in the framework of the criminal case, the investigation of which is being carried out in the Investigation Department for Grave Crimes of the Prosecutor General’s Office.

The statement reads that as part of an organized group, Karampetian repeatedly deliberately and illegally crossed the state border of Azerbaijan through Armenia in 2014-2018 and visited Khankendi and other settlements where he voiced appeals against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan with the aim of promoting the so-called “Nagorno-Karabakh Republic” at the international level.

On February 20, 2018, Karampetian was involved as an accused person in the criminal case under articles 281.2 (public appeals directed against the state, committed repeatedly) and 318.2 (illegal crossing of the state border of Azerbaijan by an organized group) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan. By a court decision, a preventive measure in the form of arrest was chosen against him.

Unauthorized visits to Nagorno-Karabakh and other regions of Azerbaijan occupied by Armenia as well as appeals against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan made there are illegal. The work is constantly carried out to prevent such illegal actions and punish those responsible.

Armenia broke out a lengthy war against Azerbaijan by laying territorial claims on the country. Since a war in the early 1990s, Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan's territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding regions. More than 20,000 Azerbaijanis were killed and over 1 million were displaced as a result of the large-scale hostilities.

To this day, Armenia has not implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding regions.
