Germany supports the settlement of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict through negotiations, said German Ambassador to Azerbaijan Michael Kindsgrab.

“Germany supports territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and we would like the negotiation process on the settlement of the conflict to continue,” the diplomat said at a press conference on October 3.

Along with Belarus, Italy, Sweden, Finland and Turkey, Germany is a permanent member of the OSCE Minsk Group, established to broker a peaceful settlement to the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The organization is co-chaired by the U.S., Russia and France.

Armenia captured Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding regions from Azerbaijan in a war that followed the Soviet breakup in 1991. More than 20,000 Azerbaijanis were killed and nearly 1 million were displaced as a result of the war.

Large-scale hostilities ended with a Russia-brokered ceasefire in 1994 but Armenia continued the occupation in defiance of four UN Security Council resolutions calling for immediate and unconditional withdrawal.

Peace talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs have produced no tangible results so far.
