OSCE monitoring on line of contact ends without incident

In accordance with the mandate of the Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, the OSCE mission has today conducted a monitoring on the line of contact of troops located in Azerbaijan’s Alibayli village of Tovuz district.

Azerbaijan`s Defense Ministry reported that the monitoring ended without an incident.

On the Azerbaijani side, the monitoring was held by field assistants of the Personal Representative of the OSCE chairperson-in-office personal representative Mikhail Olaru and Simon Tiller.

On the Azerbaijani territories occupied and controlled by the Armenian armed forces, the monitoring was carried out by field assistants of the OSCE chairperson-in-office personal representative Gennady Petrica and Martin Schuster.

Armenia captured Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding regions from Azerbaijan in a war that followed the Soviet breakup in 1991. More than 20,000 Azerbaijanis were killed and nearly 1 million were displaced as a result of the war.

Large-scale hostilities ended with a Russia-brokered ceasefire in 1994 but Armenia continued the occupation in defiance of four UN Security Council resolutions calling for immediate and unconditional withdrawal.

Peace talks mediated by Russia, France and the U.S. within the OSCE Minsk Group have produced no results so far. Despite the fragile ceasefire agreement, Armenia keeps violating armistice with Azerbaijan.
