MP: Restoration of Jojug Marjanli village is serious message to Armenia

Restoration of the liberated Jojug Marjanli village of the Jabrayil region is a historic event and a serious message to Armenia, Azerbaijani MP Aydin Mirzazade told Trend on April 12.

Mirzazade said that Azerbaijan thus once again openly showed Armenia that it will never back down from the position on the liberation of its occupied lands.

The village was liberated from the Armenian occupation as a result of the Azerbaijani army’s Horadiz operation in 1994. As Armenians occupied the strategic height Leletepe before the April battles in 2016, it was impossible to live in the Jojug Marjanli village. It became safe to live in the village only after the Azerbaijani Armed Forces liberated the height from the Armenian occupation in April 2016.

Mirzazade further noted that the presidential decree on measures to restore the village is a historic document.

“At the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers dedicated to the results of the first quarter of 2017 and future tasks, the head of state reiterated that the restoration of the Jojug Marjanli village demonstrates that the Azerbaijani people will never reconcile with the occupation of their lands and they will rebuilt all cities and villages after the restoration of the territorial integrity of the country,” Mirzazade said.

The MP added that the construction of new houses, renovation of communication lines and construction of school in the village are creating conditions for resettlement of the population of the village and for their return to normal life.

In late January 2017, President Ilham Aliyev ordered to restore Jojug Marjanli. Under the order, 4 million manats were allocated for the construction of 50 private houses, a school building and relevant infrastructure at the first stage. Moreover, the president signed an order on additional measures to construct the road leading to the liberated Jojug Marjanli village and allocated 4.3 million manats from the state budget for the construction of 9 km long highway in the village.

The MP emphasized that Azerbaijan will continue to focus all efforts on liberation of the country's lands from the Armenian occupation, resettlement of the population in these territories and ensuring of the security of citizens.

“The events of last April demonstrated the power of Azerbaijanand the country’s Armed Forces,” Mirzazade said. “In the example of this village, Azerbaijan has taken a new step to assert its sovereignty.”

Armenia captured Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding regions from Azerbaijan in a war that followed the Soviet breakup in 1991. More than 20,000 Azerbaijanis were killed and nearly 1 million were displaced as a result of the war.

Large-scale hostilities ended with a Russia-brokered ceasefire in 1994 but Armenia continued the occupation in defiance of four UN Security Council resolutions calling for immediate and unconditional withdrawal.
