First Army Commander of the Turkish Armed Forces, Army General Musa Avsever said the friendly relations existing between Azerbaijan and Turkey should be preserved and developed.

Avsever made the remark as he met with Azerbaijan’s Consul General to Istanbul Masim Hajiyev on December 15.

The Turkish Army General recalled that Azerbaijan's national leader Heydar Aliyev used to say, Turkey and Azerbaijan, see each other as “one nation in two states”, and noted that the two countries have common history, roots, language, religion and traditions.

Avsever highly appreciated the success Azerbaijan achieved in military and defense industries since the country gained independence.

The First Army Commander expressed concern over the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and that the problem has not still been resolved. He noted that the liberation of some territories during the April battles show the courage and power of the Azerbaijani army.

Armenia broke out a lengthy war against Azerbaijan laying territorial claims on its South Caucasus neighbor. Since a war in the early 1990s, Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan's territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding regions. More than 20,000 Azerbaijanis were killed and over 1 million were displaced as a result of the large-scale hostilities.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding districts.

Masim Hajiyev, in turn, offered condolences over casualties and injuries as a result of the terrorist attacks in Istanbul. He noted that every unpleasant incident, including terrorist acts, is negatively perceived in Azerbaijan.

“We are a country suffering from Armenian terrorism. Azerbaijan is near Turkey in all matters, including in fight against terrorism,” the General Consul said.

A twin bomb attack outside a football stadium in Istanbul killed 38 people, including 30 police and injured 155 others.

Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry condemned the terrorist attack committed in Istanbul.
