Envoy: UK backs int'l efforts aimed at solving Karabakh conflict

The United Kingdom supports international efforts aimed at resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

British Ambassador to Azerbaijan Carole Crofts made the remark while talking to Trend about the possible benefits of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict resolution.

“Benefits of peace not only for Azerbaijan, but the whole region would be immense. We would not see any further lost of life. We support the efforts of OSCE MG co-chairs, they have been trying for long time to resolve the conflict,” says the ambassador.

Armenia broke out a lengthy war against Azerbaijan laying territorial claims on its South Caucasus neighbor. Since a war in the early 1990s, Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan's territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding regions. More than 20,000 Azerbaijanis were killed and over 1 million were displaced as a result of the large-scale hostilities.

Carole Crofts added that “It would be wonderful if we could see further progress, and peace brought to this country.”

Two decades of talks mediated by the OSCE MG group have failed to produce a breakthrough, and the renewed hostilities in April 2016, the worst since the ceasefire deal signed in 1994, were assessed as the result of inactivity of the international community.

Azerbaijan, which has been subjected to the aggression, occupation and ethnic cleansing by Armenia over the years, has never ruled out the peaceful resolution of the conflict and never left the negotiating table.
