President: Germany ready to contribute to early resolution of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict

By Rashid Shirinov

Germany is ready to facilitate a quickest and peaceful resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, said Germany's President Joachim Gauck in his letter addressed to Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan on the occasion of the country’s Independence Day.

In the message, Gauck noted that the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is of great importance, RIA Novosti reports.

“As the presiding country of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, Germany is willing to contribute to the speedy and peaceful resolution of conflict,” the president noted.

Armenia broke out a lengthy war against Azerbaijan laying territorial claims on its South Caucasus neighbor. Since a war in the early 1990s, Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan's territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding regions. More than 20,000 Azerbaijanis were killed and over 1 million were displaced as a result of the large-scale hostilities.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding districts.
