Baku’s Rashid Behbudov Music Theater hosted a very special and exciting performance of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” by the prominent, William Shakespeare, during the nights of October 7 and 8.

A dazzling and modern performance of the play stunned locals and foreigners alike in the capital.

The touring play featured a TISA high school cast, with a TISA high school rock band and one special rock-guitar guest from TISA primarily school.

Directed by Alexander Gardner-McTaggart and with Musical Director Margus Glanville, “The Dream” attracted a sufficiently wide foreign audience in Baku.

The romantic comedy classic combined the music and dance of the Caucasian region, with a live rock band and a hint of the Renaissance. The combination made a worthy connection between Azerbaijan and classical Western drama.

The high school students were brilliant in their performances. It was obvious that they had worked hard, bringing about roaring cheers from the audiences.

Although the cast involved amateur actors, some professional actors and actress could even be envious of the students’ talent. Many of the performers were both singing, playing different musical instruments and had entered their characters perfectly.

"A Midsummer Night's Dream" is believed to have been written between 1590 and 1597.

The plot of the play starts with Hermia and Lysander, two young loves, who are about to run off with each other. Hermia’s father her to marry Demetrious and Demetrious wants to marry Hermia, all while Helena wants to marry Demetrious, but he is bored of her, and is attracted to Hermia. It could all be so perfect: Hermia with Lysander, Helena with Demetrius ... if only Demetrius loved Helena! Enter the king of the Elementals, Oberon, armed with magic. He sees this unfold, and tells his servant Puck to use a magic flower to right the wrong. The craftsmen enter the forest to practice their play, their lead actor, Bottom, the prima donna is sighted by Puck ... Fortunately it all ends well, as the scenario is planned by the king.
