Dr. Parvin Gozalov, a PhD in History, who is an employee at the Azerbaijani National History Museum, discovered two flags belonging to the Azerbaijani Nakhchivan Khanate.

The discoveries were found during a scientific excursion to St. Petersburg, Russia.

Both flags were found at Russia’s State Hermitage, the National History Museum. Before now, the flags were presented in various foreign museums as "eighteenth and nineteenth centuries Muslims flags".

The first flag can be traced back to 1812 and was taken as a trophy by Major General Pyotr Kotlyarevsky at the Battle of Aslanduz. The flag is indicated in the archival documents of the State Hermitage as the “Trophy of the Battles of Years 1912, 1913, 1914”.

The flag has rectangular form, with a length of 145 cm, and a width of 159 cm.

The second flag of the Nakhchivan Khanate is dated to 1827 and was taken as a trophy by General Ivan Paskevich during the occupation of the khanate.

The length of the flag is 178 cm, and the width is 144 cm.

The Nakhchivan Khanate was founded in 1747. It covered the area from Zangazur range of mountains to Araz River. The center of Khanate was Nakhichivan city and it bordered the Garabagh, Garadagh, Khoy, Maku and Yerevan khanates. It was divided into the mahals of Nakhichevan, Alinjachay, Mavazikhatun, Daralayaz, Khok and others. The area of khanate was annexed to Russia according to Turkmanchay Treaty in 1828.
