YARAT Contemporary Art Center and the French Institute in Azerbaijan invite all to ‘Faun and Majestic Nymph’ contemporary dance performance by Emmanuelle Huynh, a popular French dancer and choreographer.

The free performance will be held at the YARAT Contemporary Art Center at 7:30 p.m. on May 7.

The performance was inspired by one-act ballet ‘The Afternoon of a Faun’ by choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky, first performed in the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris in May 1912.

The costumes and sets were designed by the painter Leon Bakst and the phototypes (specific printing mechanism) were produced by Adolf Mayer.

The organizing company state that: “This performance has raised special interest due to the fact that it was created along traditional lines, while at the same time becoming a precursor of the whole contemporary dance movement. This is exactly what makes it universally interesting.”

Emmanuelle Huynh will hold a dance workshop on May 6 with the participation of young dancers at the Azerbaijan State University of Culture and Art.

Yarat Contemporary Art Center is the first permanent space for the not-for-profit organization Yarat, which has commissioned over 80 projects since it was created in 2011 by Founder and Creative Director Aida Mahmudova and a group of artists.

The center is a dedicated hub for contemporary art and art education in the region.

Education is at the core of YARAT’s activities and a study centre, with a library and auditorium, will house YARAT’s comprehensive education program featuring talks, screenings and workshops for diverse audiences from student artists to families.
