Photography legend to give a speech in Baku

YARAT Contemporary Art Space invites photography enthusiasts to attend an artist talk by legendary photographer David Montgomery in Baku.

The entry-free talk will be given on May 29, at the International Mugam Center at 7 p.m.

Montgomery is an American photographer known for his portraits of the rich and famous.

His works have become standard descriptions of the 1960s.

Montgomery's subjects include Bill Clinton, Mick Jagger, Jimi Hendrix, Margaret Thatcher, Peter O'Toole, Andy Warhol, and the members of Great Britain's royal family.

He studied music at the Juilliard School of Music. He was an assistant photographer to Lester Bookbinder in New York, and accompanied him on a working visit to the United Kingdom in the early 1960s and stayed there.

Montgomery has contributed regularly to Vogue, The Sunday Times, and Rolling Stone.

Aside to this, Montgomery has photographed a special edition stamp for the millennium, which won a silver award at the Design and Art Direction Awards.

The photograph's collection of images capturing pop culture of sixties has become classical. Proud Chelsea featured Montgomery's photographs of The Rolling Stones in Decca Years: The Rolling Stones 1962- 1971 in 2011.

Montgomery's artist talk will be given in the framework of YARAT's educational program which includes lectures, seminars, and monthly workshops by famous artists, photographers, curators, and art critics.

All workshops and seminars within the YARAT educational program are free of charge.

Lectures and master classes were given in Baku by representatives of the Moscow National Centre for Contemporary Arts (NCCA) Vitaly Patsyukov and Aleksandr Obukhov, founder of the Tbilisi Centre of Contemporary Art Vato Tsereteli, Dean of Central St. Martins University Mark Dunhill, and head of the faculty of sculpture at the Royal College of Fine Arts Jordan Baseman in 2012-2014.

Recently, Sara Raza, an independent curator has given her talk in Baku.

Before the end of the year, lectures, artist talks, and workshops will be given by artist Mahmoud Bakhshi, photographers Mervyn Arthur and Rosella Emmanuel, and Professor Birgitta Hosea of the University of the Arts in London who specializes in the area of animation and video art.
