Azerbaijan becomes member of IBC of UNESCO

By Aygul Salmanova

As a result of elections held in the subsidiary bodies of UNESCO within the framework of the 39th session of the General Conference in Paris, Azerbaijan was elected as a member of the Intergovernmental Bioethics Committee of UNESCO for a period of 4 years.

Membership in the IGBC will help inform international scientific circles about the achievements of the country in the field of bioethics, as well as on cooperation with scientists from other countries and the exchange of experience.

The Intergovernmental Bioethics Committee (IGBC) was created in 1998, under Article 11 of the Statutes of the International Bioethics Committee (IBC). It is comprised of 36 Member States whose representatives meet at least once every two years to examine the advice and recommendations of the IBC.

The Member States are elected by UNESCO's General Conference taking into account cultural diversity and balanced geographical representation. Members serve for terms of about four years, from the end of the ordinary session of the General Conference in which they are elected until the end of the second subsequent ordinary session.

Azerbaijan became member of UNESCO on June 3 1992, after restoration of its independence. In 2003, Azerbaijan and UNESCO signed the framework agreement on cooperation in the areas of culture, science, education and communication, which allowed Azerbaijan to become one of the donors of UNESCO.

Meanwhile the country is an active member of five UNESCO committees. Five national committees on various programs of the organization operate in Azerbaijan.
