Azerbaijan’s “Pomegranate Orchard” screened in Los Angeles

Azerbaijan’s "Pomegranate Orchard" movie by Ilgar Najaf has been screened at the Asian World Film Festival in Los Angeles.

The Asian World Film Festival (AWFF) brings the best of a broad selection of Asian World cinema to Los Angeles in order to draw greater recognition to the region's wealth of filmmakers, strengthening ties between the Asian and Hollywood film industries.

Speaking to the ceremony, supported by the Consulate General of Azerbaijan in Los Angeles, Consul General Nasimi Agayev informed about the history of national cinematography since 1898, about the existing traditions and noted that Azerbaijan is one of the first countries to take steps in this area.

Talking about the movie, Agayev said that “Pomegranate Orchard” about a family tragedy is a beautiful piece of art.

The Consul General thanked the leadership of the Asian World Film Festival and noted that the festival was held for the second year in a row, and in 2016 in the same festival Azerbaijan was represented by “Ali and Nino” whose project manager and executive producer was the Vice President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Leyla Aliyeva.

The founder and executive director of the festival, George Shamshum said that he was pleased with Azerbaijan's participation in the festival and to cooperate with the Consulate General.

"Pomegranate Orchard" features a story about an old man, who lives along with his grandson and daughter-in-law in the decrepit house amidst of the huge pomegranate garden. Sudden comeback of his wayward son has changed a gentle rhythm of their peaceful existence. Forgotten bitter memories have come back and even more, new challenges are in store for them.

Scriptwriters are Asif Rustamov, Ilgar Najafov and Roelof Jan Minneboo (The Netherlands). Operator-director is Aykhan Salar (Germany), animation director is Rafig Nasirov, executive producer Akif Aliyev, producer Mushfig Hatamov,

The cast includes Qurban Ismayilov, Anar Hasanov, Samimi Farkhadov and Hasan Agayev.

The world premiere of the movie was held within the “East of the West” competition of the Czech Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

Notably, movie is also included in the long list of applicants for the Oscar 2017 in the nomination "The best film in a foreign language".
