An exhibition of national carpets opened in Azerbaijan Cultural Center in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on October 19.
Addressing the event, head of the center Samir Abbasov said that Azerbaijan is known for various kinds of national art, including carpet weaving.
In the Middle Ages, a large number of carpets and carpet products were exported from Azerbaijan to foreign countries. These carpets had a complex ornament, unique patterns and were reflected in the works and miniatures of famous European artists.
In the second half of the 18th century in the northern part of Azerbaijan there were small feudal khanates - Sheki, Baku, Guba, Garabagh, Irevan, Ganja, Nakhchivan, Shirvan. At this time, the production of carpets greatly expanded. Each khanate had its own carpet workshop. As a result, various carpet schools appeared in the territory of Azerbaijan.
Today there are seven main carpet schools in Azerbaijan: Shirvan, Baku, Cuban, Kazakh, Ganja, Tabriz and Karabakh.
In 1967, the world's first Carpet Museum was established in Azerbaijan.
In November 2010 the Azerbaijani carpet was proclaimed a Masterpiece of Intangible Heritage by UNESCO.
