During the meeting, Gurbanov said that the tracking works on the territory of Georgia till the border with Turkey have been totally completed. Works on power supply, installation of signalization systems are expected to be finished in the near future. After that, the area will be put in commission.

The Turkish minister, in his turn, said that most of the work on the territory of Turkey has already been completed. He also said that Turkey is planning to construct a logistics center in the Kars province within the framework of the project, Haberturk reported.

“BTK project will strengthen social, humanitarian and economic relations between Turkey and Azerbaijan. As many as 3 million tons of freight is expected to be transported through the railway. The figure may increase in the future and reach 17 million tons,” he added.

Earlier, Javid Gurbanov said the railway route will be commissioned in November 2016.

The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway is being constructed on the basis of the Georgian-Azerbaijani-Turkish intergovernmental agreement. Initially, this railway will handle 5 million tons of cargo. However, the capacity is expected to reach 17 million tons in the future.

This project is expected to open a new rail corridor from the Caspian Sea to Europe via Turkey, excluding the need for sea transportation.
