Azerbaijan’s computer producing plant Kur may switch back to the local assembly of computer equipment, a source in the domestic IT industry told Trend.

Earlier the company, located in Mingachevir, was reported to be upgrading its power supply to start the production of brand-name computer equipment.

However, the source said, it is possible that local production will resume, unless the appropriate arrangements are made with the Taiwan-based company Acer.

“There is no final decision on the matter yet, and local producers could be an alternative to the global vendor,” said the source.

At present, work is underway to modernize production, repair and install equipment to begin serial production of portable and desktop computers at the plant.

Acer has previously inquired about the production capacity of the plant for the production of laptop and tablet computers. The project gained urgency after the plant was deemed a branch of the High-Tech Park.

Initial investment in the project has been about 10 million manats (over $9.5 million). The main objective of the project is to attract foreign capital and to create opportunities for the export of finished products abroad.

The Kur plant is a joint venture of the production association Teleradio of the Communications and High Technologies Ministry and the IT-company Sinam.

The plant, established ten years ago, is the only industrial enterprise engaged in the assembly-line production of computer equipment and electronics in the South Caucasus.

The Mingachevir High Tech Park was set up in view of securing sustainable development and economic competitiveness. An initial investment of 2 million manats was allocated to the project.
