Hungarian ex-official says Azerbaijan is friend of Hungary

The EU is concerned about energy security, and Azerbaijan might have a key role in the diversification of the resources and the routes, Levente Kozma, the former Hungarian senior foreign policy adviser (2003-2010), told Trend July 29.

Kozma said since Hungary is still very reliant on Russia’s gas, and a significant part of it comes through Ukraine, his country is exposed to the Russian-Ukrainian conflicts, and not only to the military ones.

“Hungary is seeking to diversify not only its energy sources, but also the way energy gets to Hungary,” he said.

Kozma also said Azerbaijan has been a friend of Hungary both at the time when the leftist government was in power in his country and now during the rule of the current right government of Viktor Orbán.

He added that the good intergovernmental and personal relations, the common interests in cooperation created a good basis for commercial, cultural and every kind of cooperation between Azerbaijan and Hungary.

“We, Hungarians, hear more and more about Azerbaijan and more and more business delegations are travelling back and forth,” said Kozma.

It should be noted that according to Azerbaijan’s State Customs Committee (SCC) the trade between Azerbaijan and Hungary in January-February 2015 stood at $2.881 million, or 1.8 times less than the same period of last year.
