Azerbaijan to use local fiber optics

Azerbaijan will replace imported fiber optics with domestic production.

Sumgayit Technological Park will be a supplier of fiber optic cables in the project of broadband internet development in Azerbaijan, the park reported.

"Production capacity of the park can fully meet the domestic demand of the country for fiber optic cables. The main advantage of the local producer is an acceptable price for the customer, which is lower than that of the imported cable," according to the report.

The price of local products will be approximately 30 percent cheaper than that of imported fiber optic cables.

Currently, the park is in talks with the Azerbaijani operators on the issue.

Being the only manufacturer of such products in Azerbaijan, the Sumgayit Park uses European technology and equipment for the production of fiber-optic cables, as well as all its other types.

The development of broadband Internet projects in Azerbaijan aims to provide the whole country, including remote rural areas, with high-speed internet in the range of 10-100 megabits/second and to increase the share of broadband internet users to 85 percent.

Currently, about 70 percent of the population uses the Internet, and the broadband Internet penetration among the population stands at 50 percent.

The total cost of the project is estimated at more than 450 million manats.

The project will be implemented through a loan for 27 million euros allocated by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The interest rate is six percent per annum.

Azerbaijan is taking the 64th place in the world in terms of ICT development, the International Telecommunication Union has said.

Azerbaijan is adopting a series of measures to develop the non-oil segment of its economy. In this context, ICT is one of the prominent sectors, and the income of Azerbaijan's information technology sector has doubled in the past five years.
