Interest in alternative energy for power generation jumps
Following the accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant (NPP) in Japan interest in the development of alternative and renewable energy sources increased, the representative of the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, Katsuaki Sato, said.
He made the remark during the roundtable on the topic: "The convergence of technologies and the shapes of future: the main challenges of the XXI century" in the framework of the IV Baku International Humanitarian Forum in Baku on October 3.
Sato said that the accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant has occurred due to the earthquake and ensuing tsunami, resulting in a damaged reactor vessel.
After the accident, public confidence for the country's nuclear energy decreased, which in turn increased the interest in the development of alternative energy, especially solar, water, wind and other renewable energy sources, Sato said.
Budget for the program of development of different areas of alternative energy in Japan is 121 billion yen, he added.
In his turn, representative of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Ivan Vinenovich said that there are 437 nuclear reactors in the world and nuclear power plants operate in 30 countries.
He said that at present, nuclear reactors are under construction in Belarus and the United Arab Emirates, and nuclear reactors will be built in another 5 countries during the next 5 years.
