Lithuania welcomes a mutually beneficial cooperation with Azerbaijan in the spheres of maritime, air, road and cargo transportation and has a strong belief that it will further develop successfully, the Lithuanian Ministry of Transport and Communications told Azernews.

“Lithuania has established a well-functioning multimodal transport and logistics system and plays an important transit country role in the East-West and North-South transportation corridors; therefore, our country offers Azerbaijan a safe, fast and inexpensive transportation of Azerbaijani cargo to Europe and the Scandinavian countries,” the message said.

The ministry noted that the accession of Azerbaijan to the international combined train project - the Viking Train – is an important moment in the Lithuanian-Azerbaijani cooperation.

“Our countries confirmed their desire to expand cooperation in the field of road transport and cargo transportation and to conclude the Agreement between Azerbaijan and Lithuania on Cooperation in the Field of International Transportation of Passengers and Cargoes by road. Furthermore, Lithuania is ready to continue the process of coordinating the draft Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the Republic of Lithuania on maritime transport,” the message said.

Lithuania is interested in expanding air routes from Lithuania and one of the priority areas is the opening of direct regular air service between Azerbaijan and Lithuania.

“We are informed about the interest of the Azerbaijani side to continue the process of coordinating the draft Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the Republic of Lithuania on air communication. We are interested in the course of the negotiations on Azerbaijan's accession to the common airspace of the EU as well,” the ministry reported.

Moreover, with regard to the cooperation in postal affairs, LLC "Azərpoçt" and JSC "Lietuvospaštas" cooperate in the organization of electronic money transfers through the SC / STEFI system.

On April 1, 2015, a corresponding agreement was signed between the postal organizations.

“The development of transport infrastructure in the Eastern Partnership region is a key element of the European Neighbourhood Policy. Lithuania, being a member of the European Union, strongly supports the expansion of the TEN-T network to the transport network of the Eastern Partnership countries,” the message said.

Lithuania invites Azerbaijan to cooperate with the EU in the framework of existing programs and instruments aimed at enhancing the transport interconnection between the EU and f Azerbaijan, according to the ministry.

Likewise, Lithuania is interested in expanding cooperation with Azerbaijan in the field of ICT and IT.

“We are interested in the progress of the Trans-Eurasian Information Super Highway project, in which Azerbaijan is actively involved. The project aims to build a transnational fiber-optic line through the countries of Western Europe and East Asia,” the message said.

We continue to share our experience in implementing major projects in the field of electronic communications to reduce the digital divide between the city and the countryside, which are considered exemplary in the context of the EU, the ministry added.
