Baku-Islamabad relations on rise
By Nigar Abbasova
Azerbaijan and Pakistan, the two strategic partners, are keen to expand their cooperation and achieve strong economic partnership. Pakistan has already developed a 5-year trade plan on the increase of the export volume to Azerbaijan up to $500 million, Dawn newspaper reported.
The plan is reportedly developed jointly by the ministries of trade and military production of Pakistan, following the 3-day visit of Pakistani Prime Minister Navaz Sharif to Baku.
The plan envisages the expansion of access to the Azerbaijani market through setting a preferential trade regime, which further may be substituted by a free trade agreement between the countries.
Moreover, Islamabad established a committee on the expansion of trade and economic relations with Azerbaijan.
The volume of export from Pakistan to Azerbaijan amounted to some $60 million, while the indices of import stand at $0.03 million. The Baku-Islamabad cooperation extends to every sphere ranging from political, economic, technological, security to cultural arenas.
A unique attribute of Azerbaijan-Pakistan bilateral relations is strong support that both countries extend to each other on issues of mutual interest and international arena.
The trade turnover between Azerbaijan and Pakistan amounted to $1.8 million in the first quarter of 2016.
Pakistan was among the first countries that recognized the independence of Azerbaijan in October 1991
