Latvian ambassador to Azerbaijan Juris Maklakovs has said his country considers the possibility of importing high quality industrial and agricultural products from Nakhchivan to the Latvian market in future, Azertac reported.

“We had a chance to discuss this issue at meetings we have had here,” he told journalists after viewing an exhibition of local industrial and agricultural products during his visit to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. “I believe that in future we will manage to build cooperation between Latvia and Nakhchivan that will cover a variety of areas,” the ambassador stressed.

Maklakovs, who also visited several industrial enterprises in Nakhchivan, hailed “favourable” business environment in the Autonomous Republic.

The diplomat underlined Nakhchivan’s rich cultural legacy as he also familiarized himself with local carpet-weaving traditions.

“We were fully informed about carpet-weaving in Nakhchivan at a local carpet museum," Maklakovs said stressing that the tradition of carpet-weaving still continues there.

Azerbaijan-Latvia trade turnover amounted to $2.04 million in January-March 2016. This is 5.9 percent more than in the same period of 2015, according to the Azerbaijani State Customs Committee.

The priority areas of cooperation between the two countries include joint investment projects, increasing the volume trade turnover, effective use of international transportation corridors, communication in the spheres of education, agriculture, construction, tourism and health.

Azerbaijan is an important partner of Latvia in the spheres of transit and logistics in South Caucasus. Latvia is also an important transportation artery and an integral part of the new Silk Road and the North-South transportation corridor.
