UNESCO says European Games to open window of Azerbaijan to world

The First European Games to be held in Baku will open a window of Azerbaijan to Europe and to the world in general, said Professor Alberto Garcia, director of UNESCO Chair in Bioethics and Human Rights, Rome, Italy

“This is more than sport activity,” he told Trend on June 9.

This is a strategic decision that the government of Azerbaijan has taken for organizing this very complex event in terms of logistics, traveling and accommodation, Garcia added.

He said that the European Games helps not only improve sport, but also mutual knowledge and mutual understanding between different participants.

“It is important that people from Europe come and see beautiful Azerbaijan,” said Garcia. “It is a country that I would like to come back.”

Baku 2015 is the first ever European Games, an exciting and innovative multi-sport event for the continent which will take place on June 12-28, 2015.

There will be a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports. More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe will be representing their nations over 17 days of competition.

Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
