Azerbaijan`s NOC responds to "Amnesty International"

The National Olympic Committee of Azerbaijan stated that the "Amnesty International" organization disseminates inaccurate, biased information in connection with the forthcoming European Games.

“Inaccurate and biased information that has been disseminated by "Amnesty International" organization 100 days before the start of the European Games in Baku is nothing but another provocation,” the statement reads.

“President of the Swedish Olympic Committee Stefan Lindeberg's baseless and slanderous opinions about Azerbaijan while speaking about the first European Games to be held in Baku during his interview with 'Aftonbladet' newspaper are nothing but a provocation aimed at discrediting the European games in public and to slander Azerbaijan.”

The NOC also called the appeal of the Swedish Olympic Committee to the European Olympic Committee regarding the repression in Azerbaijan a hypocrisy.

"In contrast to the above, taking into account the fact that the Azerbaijani mass media respect the thoughts of foreign journalists who visited Azerbaijan, the expressed thoughts are untrue.

As for the costs of participation in the Games and stay of the Swedish team by the Organizing Committee of the European Games "Baku-2015", it applies to all teams, not just Swedish. Travel expenses, accommodation and meals will be paid. Azerbaijan's doors are open for everyone. We hope that after gaining great success in the first European Games, people will acknowledge more closely and put an end to such provocations against us,” the NOC said.

Baku 2015 is the first-ever European Games, an exciting and innovative multi-sport event for the continent that will take place on June 12-28, 2015.

There will be a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports. More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe will be representing their nations over 17 days of competition.

Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
