FM Mammadyarov to meet with OSCE MG co-chairs next week

The OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs will see Azerbaijan's Foreign Minister Mammadyarov in Brussels on May 31 and Armenia's Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian in Paris on June 2, the US co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group, James Warlick, told Trend May 26.

Peace talks over the long-lasting Nagorno-Karabakh conflict that emerged over Armenia’s territorial claims against Azerbaijan are underway on the basis of a peace outline proposed by the Minsk Group co-chairs and dubbed the Madrid Principles.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
