Top official: Tense situation on frontline to last until liberation of Azerbaijan’s occupied lands

The tension on the frontline will continue, regardless of whether we want it or not, until the liberation of Azerbaijani lands occupied by Armenia, withdrawal of Armenian occupation troops from those lands and reaching a peace agreement.

Azerbaijani President's Aide for Public and Political Affairs Ali Hasanov made the remark while talking to media on May 4, Region TV channel reported.

“The recent shelling of civilians showed Armenia's destructive position in the talks on resolving the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict,” said the top official, adding that it is also shown on the line of contact.

Armenia has occupied 20 percent of the Azerbaijani territory in the early 1990s. As an outcome of the war, more than one million of people have been subjected to the ethnic cleansing by Armenia. The occupation of the territory of the sovereign State with its internationally recognized boundaries has been left out of due attention of the international community for years which resulted in the renewal of hostilities in early April.

The renewed hostilities, which are regarded as the worst since the ceasefire deal signed in 1994, ended on April 5. Although both sides agreed to cease the operations on the frontline, Armenia still continues its provocations on the frontline and targets Azerbaijani civilians living in the villages adjacent to the frontline zone.

Baku, which has been and remains committed to the peaceful negotiated solution to the conflict, had repeatedly stated that the presence of the Armenian Armed Forces in the occupied territories is a major obstacle to the settlement of the conflict and threat to the regional stability.
