Armenian troops keep high tension on contact line
The situation on the contact line between Azerbaijan and Armenia has remained tense as the Armenian Armed Forces shattered ceasefire a total of 120 times throughout the day, Azerbaijan`s Defense Ministry reported on January 13.
The Armenian armed forces fired at the positions of the Azerbaijani armed forces located in Gizilhajili village and Gazakh region.
The ceasefire was violated in Talish, Gulustan villages in Goranboy region, Goyarkh, Yarimja, Chilaburt villages in Tartar region, Shikhlar, Javahirli, Kangarli, Sarijali, Novruzlu, Marzili, Shuraabad, Garagashli, Yusifjanli villages in Aghdam region, Kuropatkino village in Khojavand region, Horadiz, Garakhanbayli, Gorgan, Ashagi Seyidahmadli villages in Fuzuli region, Mehdili village in Jabrayil region, as well as nameless hills in Goranboy, Khojavand, Fuzuli and Jabrayil regions.
In view of the operational situation, Azerbaijani armed forces carried out 126 strikes on enemy positions, the Defense Ministry said.
Meanwhile, the OSCE is expected to monitor the contact line between Azerbaijani and Armenian troops on January 14.
The monitoring will be held under the mandate of the OSCE chairperson-in-office personal representative on the contact line in Azerbaijan's Tartar district, the ministry said. The monitoring will be carried out by two field assistants of OSCE chairperson-in-office personal representatives each on the Azerbaijani and the opposite side.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in
1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a
result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied
20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and
seven surrounding districts.
The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The
co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are
currently holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council's four
resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the
surrounding regions.
