Days of Moscow, jointly organized by the Russian community of Azerbaijan and the Department of Foreign Economic and International Relations of Moscow, kicked off in Baku on December 16.

The Days started with a round table held under the topic “Education through culture and culture through education - the formula of the XXI century” at the Baku Slavic University.

Addressing the event, Azerbaijani MP Mikhail Zabelin, who is also the chairman of the Russian community of Azerbaijan, greeted the Russian guests and highlighted that the relations between the two states in the development of culture and education have a long history.

Reminding that Russian community in Azerbaijan is the largest one in the Southern Caucasus, numbering more than 120,000 people, the MP said that these people represent Azerbaijan in the international arena, participate in various events and contribute to the development of the country.

“They are patriots and worthy citizens of Azerbaijan. At the same time, they are the people who are tied to their language, culture and traditions,” he said.

Zabelin also assessed achievements of the Baku Slavic University, established in 2000 with the aim to contribute to intellectual bridge between Europe and Azerbaijan.

The MP further added that all schools of Azerbaijan teach Russian language, while in some of them the lessons are though only in the Russian language.

More than 300 schools operating in the country have both Azerbaijani and Russian classes, while in 16 schools training is conducted only in the Russian language, according to the Education Ministry. The number of students receiving education in Russian language in the country with a population of over nine million is more than 30,000 people.

Senior counselor of the Russian Embassy Arkadiy Barkov, in turn, said that Russia highly values respect for the Russian language in Azerbaijan.

“Azerbaijan strictly follows the development of the Russian language and preserves this language in education,” he said. “We appreciate Azerbaijan's attitude to the Russian language.”

He noted that the Russian Embassy and the Russian Information and Cultural Center send Azerbaijani youth to study in Russian universities, and this contributes to the development of cultural and humanitarian relations between the sides.
