Unfavorable weather conditions hindered low orbit satellite AzerSky to take picture of the Guneshli offshore oil field on December 4, when the tragic fire accident occurred, Azerbaijan's satellite operator Azercosmos reported.

Last Friday, a fire broke out on the offshore platform No 10 of SOCAR’s Gunashli field, after an underwater high-pressure gas pipeline was damaged in strong storm.Out of 63 people who were on platform at the moment of accident only 33 were rescued, while 23 are still regarded missing with seven dead.

Azercosmos said helicopters and ships have been involved in the rescue operation, with which clearer photos can be obtained. In this regard, there is no need to use the satellite for such purposes.

“Resources of AzerSky satellite can be used to assess and manage such emergencies as earthquakes, floods, oil spills,” the company said.

The satellite is capable of shooting 6 million square kilometers of the surface of the Earth. The resolution of the images obtained will be 1.5 meters.

The images obtained by Azersky could contribute to the effective management and use of land, simplification in creating digital maps, etc.

Moreover, the resources of the low orbit satellite will be used for the monitoring, delimitation, and demarcation of Azerbaijan state borders.

The satellite along with its predecessor SPOT-6 will be used together. Satellites are able to carry out daily surveying six million square kilometers area of the Earth, which is 10 times the size of France.
