Baku-Tehran cooperation important for regional stability

Azerbaijan’s senior official has highlighted cooperation between Baku and Tehran for ensuring regional stability.

Ali Ahmadov, Azerbaijan`s deputy prime minister, deputy chairman and executive secretary of the New Azerbaijan Party said Azerbaijani-Iranian cooperation plays an important role in terms of cementing regional stability.

He made the remark during a meeting with Governor of Iran’s Gilan province, Mohammadali Najafi on November 18, AzerTag news agency reported.

Ahmadov stressed the role of visit of the Gilan province’s governor in developing Azerbaijani-Iranian ties.

Touching upon successfully developing relations of both countries, Ahmadov said, "It is mutual friendship and fraternity that lie at the heart of our ties".

He also stressed importance of reciprocal visits of both countries` heads of states.

Najafi, in turn, highlighted cooperation of his region with Azerbaijan in various fields. The governor said the meetings, events contributed to developing bilateral ties between both countries.

Azerbaijan and Iran have had diplomatic relations since 1918. Iran recognized Azerbaijan's independence in 1991, and diplomatic ties between the two countries were re-established in 1992.

Currently, the two countries are focusing on expanding economic ties in various fields, including industry, agriculture, energy, alternative energy and transportation.

The trade turnover between Azerbaijan and Iran amounted to $86.48 million, according to Azerbaijan’s State Customs Committee.
