Korea interested in return of Azerbaijani IDPs,refugees to homelands

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and the problems of refugees and IDPs, improvement of their living conditions were mulled as Azerbaijan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the State Committee for Refugee and IDP Affairs, Ali Hasanov met with Korean envoy to Baku, Choi Suk-inn.

Noting that the relations between the two countries based on solid foundation, Hasanov thanked the Korean government for humanitarian aids and development of organizations in Azerbaijan for IDPs and refugees to alleviate their plight.

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict emerged in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. A lengthy war in the early 1990s resulted with the occupation of over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.

Hasanov further added that the cultural relations are actively progressing between Azerbaijan and Korea, stressing Choi Suk-inn's contributions to this with many events during his diplomatic tenure in the country.

The Deputy Prime Minister wished the outgoing ambassador success in his future activities.

Choi Suk-inn, in turn, said Korea has always been interested in return of Azerbaijani IDPs and refugees to their homelands.

He hailed Azerbaijan's rapid economic development, the country's earning solid reputation in a short period of time at the global scale, and the works carried out to improve social conditions of IDPs and refugees.

The Ambassador noted that economic relations between the two countries would continue to grow in the future. He expressed hope that many Korean companies will operate in Azerbaijan as well, noting that he will leave the country with good impressions.
