UNESCO is grateful to the Azerbaijani leadership for the support it provided over the years.

This statement was made by Eric Falt, the Assistant Director-General of UNESCO on the sidelines of the "Melodies of East" International Music Festival in Uzbekistan’s city of Samarkand.

“Our cooperation with the region, including Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan are at a high level. We are very proud of the cooperation with Azerbaijan,” Falt told Trend.

He stressed that 2015 is very important for UNESCO, marking its 70th anniversary. This year the Azerbaijani government has provided active support to the organization.

Falt noted that UNESCO has organized numerous events in the region.

“We could conduct many activities in all the fields we cooperate, and primarily in the field of culture. A number of activities and opportunities in this area have been implemented in Azerbaijan, as well as in the fields of science and education. It is important for us that these activities are carried out not only in one area of cooperation, but cover all spheres,” he said.

By joining the organization in 1992, Azerbaijan began cooperation with UNESCO by providing its member states with opportunities to benefit from the assistance of its experts and technical aids, as well as training scientific and pedagogical personnel and participating in global scientific projects.

For over 20 years, the existing ties between UNESCO and Azerbaijan have been expanding, covering various fields.

During this time, a number of Azerbaijan’s material and non-material culture was included in the honor roll of world masterpieces of UNESCO, thanks to the efforts of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and its President, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Mehriban Aliyeva.

UNESCO’s Heritage list includes the Novruz holiday, Azerbaijani mugham, Azerbaijani ashig art, the Azerbaijani carpet, traditional Kalagayi headwear and the music of the Azerbaijani tar.

The main list of UNESCO World Heritage sites in Azerbaijan includes Icherisheher in Baku, including the Shirvanshahs Palace, Maiden Tower, and the Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape.

There is also a tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage sites in Azerbaijan which includes Lokbatan Mud Cone, Hirkan State Reserve, the Ordubad historical and architectural reserve, Sheki Khan's Palace, Surakhani Ateshgah Temple, the historical and architectural Susha reserve, the mausoleum of Nakhchivan, etc.

In 2012, upon the initiative of Azerbaijan, UNESCO adopted a resolution on the protection of cultural property in the occupied territories, which addresses the possibility of UNESCO technical missions visiting the Armenian occupied territories of Azerbaijan in order to monitor the state of cultural properties.
