Mexico seeking to expand cooperation with Azerbaijan

Mexico’s legislative body called on the government to take measures to expand the cooperation with Azerbaijan.

The corresponding resolution was adopted by the second committee on foreign relations, defense, and public education of the Mexican congress, the Azerbaijani foreign ministry reported on August 27.

The resolution was introduced by international relations committee chairman Gabriela Cuevas Barron, Senator Pilar Ortega Martinez, and Juan Carlos Romero.

The document provides information about Azerbaijan, and particularly notes that diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in 1992.

In addition, the document states that Mexico plays the role of a bridge between Azerbaijan and Latin America.

After gaining independence, Azerbaijan has achieved its economic development goals, which in turn has led to modernization and developments in the fields of communications, science, technology, and the growth of social welfare, according to the resolution.

The document also highlighted Azerbaijan’s role in energy security of Europe, noting that it is one of the most strategically important countries in the Caucasus.

The resolution further added that Azerbaijan has more than 150 years of experience in the production, exploitation, and processing of oil, and Mexico can benefit from this experience.

The document also provides information on the achievements of Azerbaijan in the spheres of tourism, poverty reduction, and the development of non-oil sector.

The country invests in energy, tourism, mining, telecommunications, science, technology, and other industries, according to the resolution.

It also states that the two countries have a rich cultural heritage.

The document stressed the importance of cooperation between the two countries in the spheres of economy, energy, research, agriculture, technological development.

Furthermore, the resolution’s authors call on the federal government of Mexico to strengthen relations with Azerbaijan.

Mexico recognized Azerbaijan's independence in 1991 and diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in 1992. Azerbaijan's Embassy in Mexico was established in 2006.

In 2007, Azerbaijan opened its embassy in Mexico City and Mexico followed suit by opening its embassy in Baku in 2014.

In 2011, the Mexican Senate recognized the Khojaly Massacre, whereby the Armenian armed forces, supported by the ex-Soviet 366th regiment, massacred the Azerbaijani population of Khojaly in 1992. The massacre claimed the lives of 613 civilians, including 106 women, 70 seniors, and 83 children.
