Baku urges for OSCE PA action to solve Nagorno-Karabakh conflict

Azerbaijani official has urged the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly for an action to settle the long-standing Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Azerbaijanis will return to their historical lands, including Yerevan, Bahar Muradova deputy speaker of the Azerbaijani parliament and head of the delegation of the Azerbaijani Parliament to the OSCE PA, said speaking at the jubilee session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly in Helsinki, Finland on July 6.

She went on to add that the OSCE and the Parliamentary Assembly should act to solve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict now, until it’s not too late.

Muradova said millions of people driven away from their homes continue to suffer from conflicts, and this requires urgent actions.

For over two decades, Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in conflict which emerged over Armenia's territorial claims against its South Caucasus neighbor. A lengthy war in the early 1990s resulted with expelling over one million Azerbaijanis from their native lands and occupation by the Armenian armed forces over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent regions.

“Today, there are attempts within the framework of the OSCE to move away from the international system of relations, there is a desire to divide the OSCE regions into zones of influence of Euro-Atlantic structures virtually opposing each other. The absence of solutions to these problems could jeopardize the viability of the organization,” Muradova said.

She called on to unite efforts for an early settlement of conflicts, restoring good neighborly relations based on respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity. “We must take practical steps to change the status quo in the conflict zones.”

The 24th annual session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly takes place in Helsinki on July 5-9.

The session will culminate in the adoption of the 2015 Helsinki Declaration, which will contain the Assembly's wide-ranging policy recommendations for the OSCE and its participating states in the fields of political affairs, economics, the environment and human rights.
