Elmar Mammadyarov discusses Azerbaijan's progress with WHO

Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov held a meeting with Zsuzsanna Jakab, the director of the World Health Organization's Regional Office for Europe on June 12.

While congratulating the country on the occasion of the first European Games in Baku, Jakab also stressed Azerbaijan’s achievements in health and social spheres in recent years.

Later on she noted Azerbaijan’s active participation as donor country in projects carried out within the framework of World Health Organization and expressed the organization’s intension to expand relations with the country.

Mammadyarov, in his turn, emphasized the close cooperation between Azerbaijan and World Health Organization. He also told that appreciated the aid of the organization in a number of disease-fighting projects.

At the meeting, the sides were also discussing a number of mutual issues.

WHO, by itself, is the authority responsible for public health within the United Nations system. The organization was established on April 7, 1948. The WHO Regional Office for Europe (WHO/Europe) is one of WHO’s six regional offices around the world.

It serves the WHO European Region, which comprises 53 countries, covering a vast geographical region from the Atlantic to the Pacific oceans. Azerbaijan joined this organization in 1992. Azerbaijan cooperates with WHO through Regional Office for Europe.

Besides WHO, Azerbaijan actively cooperates on health issues with different expert committees of the Council of Europe, ECO and BSEC.
