Azerbaijan, Africa Union eye issues of mutual interest

Azerbaijan`s Permanent Representative to the African Union (AU) Elman Abdullayev has met AU Commissioner for Social Affairs Mustapha Sidiki Kaloko to discuss prospects for cooperation between the country and the union.

The sides particularly discussed opportunities for collaboration in social and sports areas, and also in the field of gender equality.

Kaloko said Africa places a particular emphasis on cooperation in these spheres, and noted the importance of deepening experience exchange with Azerbaijan and increasing the number of high-level reciprocal visits.

Abdullayev highlighted the inaugural European Games to be held in Baku from June 12-28, AzerTac state news agency reported.

The African Union is a continental union consisting of 54 countries in Africa. The AU was established on 26 May 2001 in Addis Ababa and launched on 9 July 2002 in South Africa, with the aim of replacing the Organization of African Unity.
