Armenian troops breach ceasefire with Azerbaijan

The situation on the contact line between Azerbaijan and Armenia has remained tense as the Armenian Armed Forces shattered ceasefire a total of 76 times throughout the day, Azerbaijan`s Defence Ministry reported on May 21.

Armenian armed forces, located in Armenia’s Chinari village of Vazashen of Noyemberyan and Vazashen regions, Aygepar and Mosesgekh villages of Berd region, subjected to fire the positions of Azerbaijani armed forces located in Gazakh region, Alibayli and Agdam villages of Tovuz region.

The ceasefire was violated in Gulustan, Tap Garagoyunlu villages of Goranboy, Yarimja, Chilaburt and Goyarkh villages in Tartar, Shuraabad, Shikhlar, Yusifjanli, Kangarli, Garagashli villages in Agdam, Horadiz, Garakhanbayli, Ashagi Seyidahmadli villages in Fuzuli, Mehdili village of Jabrayil, as well as nameless hills of Goranboy, Khojavand, Fuzuli and Jabrayil regions.

The Armenians were silenced with a retaliatory fire.

The Ministry further announced that OSCE is expected to monitor the contact line between the Azerbaijani and Armenian armies on May 22.

The monitoring will be held under the mandate of the OSCE chairperson-in-office personal representative, on the contact line located near the village of Horadiz of Azerbaijan's Fizuli district, the ministry said.

On the Azerbaijani side, the monitoring will be carried out by the field assistants of OSCE chairperson-in-office personal representative Simon Tiller and Peter Svedberg.

On the opposite side, the monitoring will be conducted by the field assistants of OSCE chairperson-in-office personal representative Hristo Hristov and Yevgeny Sharov.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
