Japan backs peaceful end to Nagorno-Karabakh conflict

By Mushvig Mehdiyev

Japan supports the peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict based on the UN Security Council resolutions.

Japanese Special Representative for South Caucasus, Akira Muto, said in a meeting with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister, Elmar Mammadyarov in Baku on May 5 that the peaceful end to the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh should come pursuant to UN Security Council resolutions.

Mammadyarov for his turn said the occupied Azerbaijani lands should be liberated and the Armenian forces withdrawn from those territories.

Azerbaijan's internationally recognized Nagorno-Karabakh territory became a conflict zone following Armenia's aggression in the early 1990s. As a result of Armenia's armed invasion, 20 percent of Azerbaijan's territory fell under Armenia's occupation. Since the international organizations and the OSCE in particular have attempted to foster a peaceful resolution to this conflict amid Armenia's persistent derailments.

The UNSC resolutions, agreements and international law, as well as mediation efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group continue to receive the full support from the Japanese authorities.

The Mammadyarov-Muto talks also focused on bilateral cooperation in the fields of energy, agriculture, high technologies and oil sector.

The minister underlined the significance of high-level mutual visits in developing relations between both countries.

Muto supported further progress in bilateral ties with Azerbaijan and expressed Japan's wish to keep on cooperating with the South Caucasus nation in the aforementioned fields.

The cooperation within the format of GUAM+Japan was also on the agenda of meeting.
