The fact that aggressive Armenia has occupied parts of Azerbaijani lands and conducted an ethnic cleansing policy against our people was brought to light at the Eurasian Economic Summit, a top Azerbaijani official said.

In his comments to local and foreign media on the sidelines of the 18th Eurasian Economic Summit in Istanbul on April 9, Presidential Aide for Social and Political Issues, Ali Hasanov noted that the issues discussed at the summit matched Azerbaijan's national interests.

"Discussions at the 18th Eurasian Economic Summit reflected Azerbaijan's national development strategy, as well as its regional interests," Hasanov said.

Azerbaijan's internationally recognized Nagorno-Karabakh territory became a conflict zone following Armenia's aggression in the early 1990s. As a result of Armenia's armed invasion, 20 percent of Azerbaijan's territory fell under Armenia's occupation. And though the OSCE has attempted to foster a peaceful resolution to this conflict, Armenia has remained persistent in its aggression and defiance before international law.

Hasanov further noted that Azerbaijan made great many strides in view of bettering its bilateral relations with various countries attending the summit.

Talks on the importance of TANAP, TAP and Shah-Deniz 2 projects, including the significance of regional and global energy and communication projects on the Silk Road were at the forefront of the summit's agenda. It has also focused on sustainable development, as well as the role of information technology in the economic development.

Referring to the summit's significance, Hasanov said it was a good opportunity to promote Azerbaijan's new oil strategy and strategy of regional development conducted by President Ilham Aliyev.

"These strategies meet not only Azerbaijan's interests, but also the interests of neighboring countries in the Eurasian region. Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, which we are going to commission in the near future, and the Shah Deniz 2 and Southern Gas Corridor projects being implemented under Azerbaijan's leadership will come as decisive factors in ensuring the energy security of the continent in the third millennium," he said.

"By using its natural mineral resources, Azerbaijan contributes vitally to the development of the region along with its own progress increasing the nations' welfare," he added.

In this view, Hasanov noted, Azerbaijan attaches particular importance to exchanging views and experience between foreign specialists and our officials at similar summits and conferences of regional level.
