National Security Ministry guards national interests, stability in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan's National Security Ministry celebrated its 96th anniversary on March 28 in a solemn ceremony attended by the entire staff of the ministry.

Top officials of the ministry underscored particularly the ministry's role in ensuring and protecting Azerbaijan's national interests.

Addressing the event held at the ministry's academy named after Heydar Aliyev, National Security Minister, Eldar Mahmudov said the structures of the ministry will further contribute to the state policy for augmenting Azerbaijan's strength under President Ilham Aliyev's wise leadership.

Colonel General Mahmudov said that last year had been of great success for Azerbaijan in terms of national security and other fields.

"Despite the ongoing economic crisis in the world, Azerbaijan managed to save its image of dynamically developing country where national security is ensured universally," he noted.

As for the results achieved by the National Security Ministry last year, Mahmudov said the national security in Azerbaijan was reliably ensured the security along with constant stability throughout the previous year.

"The ministry has actively and regularly taken appropriate measures to fight terrorism, separatism, religious extremism and other types of crime aimed at distorting the socio-political environment in Azerbaijan," he added.

Mahmudov said international cooperation was very important for the National Security Ministry and it expanded its collaboration with international colleagues year by year.

"We have built mutual ties with 76 special service organizations in 51 countries worldwide so far. Experience and information exchange, joint activities and practical assistance are the main directives of our cooperation," the minister noted.

Referring to the upcoming European Games in Azerbaijan, Mahmudov said Europe's willingness to honor Azerbaijan as the host country of the great sportive event once more proves the country as a secure destination to arrange international contests.

"Since the high-level organization of the European Games is of great importance for Azerbaijan's authority and image in the global arena, there are major tasks for the National Security Ministry ahead," Mahmudov said.

"We deeply acknowledge the responsibility for the tasks we should complete. The ministry, with the full staff, will endeavor to further serve Azerbaijan's national interests," he added.

Addressing the celebrative ceremony, Head of the National Security Ministry's Academy, Ziya Yusifzade highly appreciated President Ilham Aliyev's outstanding merits in the light of the academy's modern development.

Deputy National Security Minister, Elchin Aliyev, in turn, said the leading global forces relied on Azerbaijan's support in solving many of the issues in the South Caucasus region, viewing the country as a reliable partner.

"Today Azerbaijan is actively attending the process of establishing both a regional and international security system," he said.

The event ended with adoption of an appeal to President Ilham Aliyev, Supreme Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces.

The national security system of Azerbaijan was established in 1919 during the 23-month power of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. Following the declaration of independence from the collapsed Soviet Union in 1991, the current National Security Ministry was established based on the legal basis of the State Security Committee of Azerbaijan.

Fundamental reforms in the ministry were launched after national leader Heydar Aliyev's rise to power in 1993, which triggered the major renovation and progress of the national security system bringing it to modern norms and standards.
