President Aliyev arrives in Bulgaria  (UPDATE)

An official welcoming ceremony for Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who is in Bulgaria on an official visit, has been held at the Alexander Nevsky Square in Sofia.

The guard of honor was arranged for President Aliyev at the square decorated with the national flags of Azerbaijan and Bulgaria.

President Rosen Plevneliev welcomed President Aliyev.

The chief of the guard of honor reported to the Azerbaijani president and the military orchestra played the national anthems of Azerbaijan and Bulgaria.

The presidents reviewed the guard of honor, and President Aliyev saluted the Bulgarian soldiers.

State and government officials of Bulgaria were introduced to President Aliyev and members of the Azerbaijani delegation were introduced to President Plevneliev.

President Ilham Aliyev also visited the tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Alexander Nevsky Square in Sofia on March 4.

The guard of honor was arranged for the head of state. President Aliyev laid a wreath at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Azerbaijan and Bulgaria are developing friendly relations after Bulgaria recognized the independence of Azerbaijan in January 1992.

The diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in June, 1992. The embassy of Bulgaria in Azerbaijan was opened in December 1999.

The potential trade turnover between the two countries does not correspond with the existing turnover. For the nine months of 2014 the trade turnover between them amounted at $123 million, according to the Azerbaijan State Statistics Committee.
