Romanian ambassador to Baku have congratulated the Romanians residing in Azerbaijan on the occasion of anniversary of the Union Day of Romanian principalities.

“156 years have passed since the Union Day, January 24, 1859, the day when Romanian principalities of Wallachia and Moldova united. It was a day which showed the power of solidarity. It was an important step towards the unification of all Romanian provinces and opened the prospect of forming the modern Romania,” Daniel Cristian Ciobanu said.

He said celebrating the Union Day of Romanian principalities in Azerbaijan, a strategic partner of Romania, is a moment of great joy.

Ciobanu noted that cooperation between Romania and Azerbaijan is strongly developing in all fields on the basis of warm friendship and mutual respect between the two peoples.

“Romanian Embassy in Baku takes the opportunity of celebrating the Union Day to warmly congratulate all Romanians in Azerbaijan,” he said.

Azerbaijan and Romania have a long history of relations dating back to the 15th century.

While the two sides enjoy good cooperation in multiple areas, the main focus has been on trade and energy links, with trade delegations and frequent talks on further development of such ties and an increase in bilateral trade since trade originating from Azerbaijan approximately five times more than ($161 million) of those from Romania ($31.83 million).

Romania also has been a strong advocate of Azerbaijan's future membership of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), pointing out the strategic importance of the country for trade and shipping, particularly with a view towards Afghanistan.
