Azerbaijan to transfer Russia technology for ensuring safety of pipelines

Azerbaijan prepares technical documents on transfer of the "Robust Noise Monitoring" – a monitoring system of diagnostics and control to Russia.

The RNM system developed in the Institute of Control Systems of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences will allow ensuring the safety of pipelines while transporting oil and gas, said Tofig Babayev, Director of the Regional Information Technologies Academy (RITA).

The memo on cooperation in this sector was inked between the Institute of Control Systems of ANAS and the Arctic community of St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences in August 2014, he told Trend.

The Arctic community of St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences will provide the RNM technology in Russia on the basis of the signed document.

“The Academy proposed to use this technology to determine the seismic stability of oil and gas pipelines in the territory of Yakutia. The project has been proposed for the Russian budget financing for 2015. I believe that concrete steps in this direction will be taken after the project receives funding. But, it will not be possible before the second half of 2015,” Babayev said.

The recent developments have made it possible to receive signals (information) on the wind speed, pressure, temperature, etc., by using sensors. During drilling operation, a set of noises and interferences were recorded. Each signal has its own specific features in accordance with which it is possible to predict undesirable incidents.

It is possible to predict accidents by using them as carriers of information, as the information is converted into signals, which are then transmitted by radio to the central office of the company.

Using of monitoring systems in the aviation, oil and other sectors will help the scientists to diagnose micro accidents at an early stage and to reduce emergencies to zero.

RNM technology also allows increasing the profitability of oil wells. The system facilitates identifying dynamometer cards, allowing saving power by more than 50 percent.

A pilot version of the RNM system was used in the 35 oil-producing facilities of Bibiheybat Oil and Gas Producing Enterprise of Azerbaijan.

Earlier Azerbaijan and Turkey have decided to set up an international network for seismic studies that will link the RNM stations. The two sides are expected to cover most of their lands with these stations, which will help determine the epicenters of earthquakes more accurately.

RNM has already been used to detect the abnormal seismic processes and monitor them in Azerbaijan. These stations are located on the island of Qum in Neftchala, Naftalan, Shirvan, Siyazan, and Gazakh. One station is located in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. In addition, two stations will be installed in Khachmaz and Zagatala regions of Azerbaijan.

The stations that are functioning now are able to register the abnormal seismic processes for 15-20 hours prior to their surface manifestations.

The system provides transmission of the seismic acoustic signals directly to the server of the Cybernetics Institute. High-frequency satellite channels are used for signal transmission, which allows the institution to carry out experiments at a higher level and quality.
