PACE appoints rapporteur on occupied Azerbaijani territories

By Sara Rajabova

Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has appointed a rapporteur on the occupied territories of Azerbaijan.

The UK Member of Parliament, Robert Walter, was appointed to prepare a report on the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh and other occupied territories, which is under Armenian invasion for over two decades.

Armenia occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent regions, after laying territorial claims against its South Caucasus neighbor that caused a brutal war in the early 1990s. Long-standing efforts by U.S., Russian and French mediators have been largely fruitless so far.

Earlier, member of the Azerbaijani delegation to the PACE Rafael Huseynov said there are appropriate grounds to discuss the issue on Nagorno-Karabakh region and other occupied territories of Azerbaijan in the political committee.
