CIS Security Council secretaries meet in Moscow

The CIS Security Council secretaries held meeting in Moscow, where they discussed the efforts to counter international terrorism and religious extremism, radicalization of Islam and its possible consequences for the CIS states, destructive activity of "Al-Qaeda" and the terrorist group "The Islamic state of Iraq and Sham" (ISIS), as well as issues of cooperation in the sphere of international information security.

Azerbaijan was represented by a delegation led by the head of Presidential Administration academician, Ramiz Mehdiyev, AzerTag state news agency reported.

Mehdiyev made a report at the meeting, noting that the participation of citizens of the CIS member countries in operations in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan as a part of various religious, extremist and terrorist groups is dangerous.

"These people gain fighting experience and skills and upon return to the countries they become serious factor menacing to national security," he said.

The participants were reported about the measures undertaken by law enforcement bodies and intelligence services of Azerbaijan for counteraction to activity of the extremist religious organizations, and about success achieved in this area.

Mehdiyev also gave detailed information on adoption of amendments to the national legislation, concerning punishment toughening for those involved in terrorism, and also for involvement of citizens of Azerbaijan to participation in armed conflicts outside the country on the basis of religious hatred.

During the visit, Mehdiyev held a bilateral meeting with the Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Nikolay Patrushev. The sides discussed a range of issues of bilateral cooperation.
